Words and Beats: Revisiting My Old Creative Self

Going back to my old creative ways, one song a time.

This morning was a musical one for me. Albeit a moody one, if you listen to the Spanish spoken word track below. It is titled, “Cafe Diferente” or Different Coffee in English.

A guitar driven musical piece with string elements and a synthesizer in the background.

I haven’t done much of this style in a long time. Reminiscent of my former passion project, Ernesto Delirium.

Cafe Diferente is a musical piece that explores a dream like scene I had in my mind for many years. It tells a short story of someone who is experiencing a surreal moment of clarity. It explores elements of connection to something that it’s not known. And yet this force is pulling this person towards it.

Sitting down and actually recording the instrument. That was a good change. While simple and repetitive a times, I believe it set the mood for the vocals.

It was all improvised and in one full take. An approach I like to do when recording my voice. I only ‘punch-in’ vocals when layering for choruses.

This time however, I just closed my eyes and let the music guide my imagination and feelings at the time.

For an example of what I mean by layering, see below. This is how a typical session looks on my end:

I also did an exploration on bilingual lyrics in some songs. The first pilot test was a song I wrote titled “Lost in Time.” You can find it across all streaming platforms.

Writing a bilingual song is an ongoing learning process for me. It is challenging, but it’s worth it. It does feel a more intellectual approach, which causes for this songs to take time to develop in my mind.

I dabbled into video editing last year, using Davinci Resolve Studio and some stock videos. I wanted to create my own “lyric video” and boy, it took a minute.

This was before I was aware of Captions AI apps and others. Though, I’m happy with the manual effort for for this. See final edited video below.

In future post I will write more about exploring my bilingual side with music and lyrics.

I hope that you are doing great and staying creative.

Until next time,
